Fantasia Movie Night

Fantasia is Disney’s 3rd Animated Feature Film which came out in 1940.  Fantasia is one of those movies that I feel like so many people skip over because it’s “boring”.  I will admit it’s one that you have to be in the mood to watch and cannot be forced as it’s not a traditional story, it’s more of a concert.  It has been a long while since I had watched this all the way through.  I grew up doing music, I learned piano when I was in grade school, started playing the flute in high school, and sang in choirs throughout the entire time.

I’ve posted my favorites in the graphic above, if you’d like to create your own graphic, feel free to use this template!

3:56 PM – I like the idea that they introduce the 3 times of music in Fantasia as music that has a definite Story, music that doesn’t have a specific plot, but creates specific pictures, and music that simply exists for its own sake.  I think that’s a great idea to categorize all music.

4:03 PM – I wish Epcot had or at one point had a music pavilion where you could sit and watch the abstract animation to music like in this “Toccata and Fugue” section.

4:06 PM – Parts of this abstract section is like watching a 90’s computer screen saver – so memorizing.

4:10 PM – Gosh, I love the music from “The Nutcracker”.  I feel like I heard it all the time growing up in advertising, but now I don’t ever hear it.

4:11 PM – Only Disney can make dancing mushrooms so cute.

4:12 PM – I played “Dance of the Reed Flutes” in high school as part of a Flute Trio for a music competition and we went to state.  I’m not going to lie, but I was so excited to play it because I knew it was in Fantasia.

4:14 PM – That fish could be Cleo’s (from “Pinocchio”) cousin

4:24 PM – Yay, Mickey’s first movie appearance!

4:24 PM – Um… Is Yensid conjuring Chernabog in that smoke before a butterfly?  How have I never noticed how like Chernabog that creature looks?

4:27 PM – This makes me miss The Great Movie Ride (RIP) in Hollywood Studios so much.

4:51 PM – This entire dinosaur part of “Rite of Spring” keeps making me think of Universe of Energy / Ellen’s Energy Adventure (RIP) in Epcot.

5:00 PM – An intermission makes sense for the time.  This movie is 2 hours.  What happened to the luxury of an intermission?  Some of us sat through Titanic and Avengers: Endgame without a bathroom break.  Wouldn’t intermission potentially increase concession sales?

5:05 PM – Petition to have a “Soundtrack” Meet and Greet somewhere someday.  With technology now, it should be easy to do!

5:09 PM – Awww, the baby unicorns in “Pastoral Symphony” are so cute, can I have one?

5:12 PM – Did that black unicorn fall twice?  I think there’s a missed edit.  I’ll have to look that up later.

5:24 PM – Why is Zues so mean?  And even if he’s annoyed with Baccus, why does he have to scare the baby unicorns and baby pegasus?

5:31 PM – The first part of the “Dance of the Hours” puts me right back in the queue for Great Movie Ride.

5:45 PM – With the first notes of “Night on Bald Mountain”, I’m immediately tensing for Chernabog’s appearance.  He’s truly the most terrifying Disney villain.

5:50 PM – Why are there so many half-naked women creatures in this scene?

5:58 PM – This movie was ahead of its time and still stands today.  It could have been one scene shorter though.
